Success
By Becky Dickerson

Wow…my success story! First of all, I never pictured being asked to share a success story. I never thought I would call myself a runner, nor would I ever think I would belong to a gym and actually use my membership. But I can and do now!

Over a year ago, I made a decision that would affect the rest of my life. It was not a decision I took lightly, but I knew something in my life must change. I was over a hundred pounds overweight and health risks were lurking my future. I had lost hundreds of pounds in my life time, only to gain the weight back and then some. Something had to give; hence my decision to have weight loss surgery. I knew that having surgery and losing weight was only part of living a more healthy life. Exercising consistently was a piece of healthy living that had always been missing. I promised myself if I was going to have surgery, then working out would become a significant priority in my life.

I have now lost over 100 pounds and feel like a different person. I have overcome many hurdles throughout my journey. When I first started at Tamarac, I was too self-conscious to come to the gym alone. I would only plan to go when I knew one of my friends would be there. That is no longer an issue. Now, I plan my days around working out and the times that work best for me.

I had always dreamed of being a runner, so my first goal when I joined Tamarac was to run a 5K. I had no idea how far that was or how long it would take me. I followed a training program that started off with running and walking at two and four minute intervals. It was tough, but sooner than expected, I was able to run one mile, then two, and finally three. I wanted to experience the runner’s high that everyone talks about. Never before could I fathom having the urge to run or experiencing a runner’s high. Now, I understand what everyone is talking about because I have joined the running madness.

For the first couple of months at Tamarac, I stuck to a pretty basic routine. I would run on the treadmill and use the weight machines. Then, one day I thought, “This is getting old.” I knew it was time to switch things up, so I started trying out the classes that were offered. I began with F.A.S.T. and then added spinning. I like the physical challenge and endurance that both of these classes provide. I schedule my time around these classes and then add extra cardiovascular and weight training.

Now, I agree. I have been successful. I have achieved this success because of my determination, the support from my family and friends, the encouraging staff at Tamarac, and the motivation I get from just being at the gym and watching others workout. I am proud of the changes that have taken place in my life and I am pleased that I am living a healthier life and feeling great!

Note: In 2009, Becky competed in over a half dozen 5K races and Fifth Third River Bank 25K. Additionally, she participated in the Tamarac Outdoor Tour and Guide Challenge. She celebrated her first Tamarac anniversary on Friday, May 29, 2009, by participating in, and serving as a role model at, the Newaygo/Oceana County Girls-on-the Run 5K in Fremont.
